UEFA Champions League Matchday 4 delivered drama, demolition jobs and late magic across Europe on Tuesday night. Nine fixtures produced 26 goals as Paris Saint-Germain stayed perfect with a record-breaking thrashing, Manchester United staged an Old Trafford miracle, and Barcelona plus Bayern Munich posted convincing wins. African players featured prominently in several key contests, adding extra flavour to a night that reshaped the league-phase table.

The headline result came in Spain where Villarreal were blown away 0-6 by defending champions Paris Saint-Germain. The French side scored four times inside the opening 17 minutes through João Neves, Désiré Doué, Senny Mayulu and Fabián Ruiz. Ruiz added a fifth after the break before teenager David Boly marked his Champions League debut with the sixth. PSG remain the only team with a 100% record and top the standings on maximum points.

At Old Trafford the drama was even greater. Manchester United trailed 0-2 inside 18 minutes to goals from Matías Soulé and a Donyell Malen penalty. Bruno Fernandes pulled one back from a retaken spot-kick just before the hour, Bryan Mbeumo struck both posts moments later, and Matheus Cunha then scored twice in three late minutes to complete a stunning 3-2 comeback.
The win ended a nine-match winless run and eased pressure on the home side. Cameroon international Mbeumo started and came agonisingly close to scoring, while fellow African Amad Diallo and Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba (who left early injured) also featured.

Barcelona were clinical at Camp Nou, beating Aston Villa 3-0. Lamine Yamal opened the scoring early before Raphinha netted a second-half brace. The result left Villa with their first Champions League defeat of the campaign.
Elsewhere Bayern Munich ground out a professional 2-0 victory at Atlético Madrid thanks to second-half goals from teenager Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer. Harry Kane was held scoreless but the Germans strengthened their position in the upper half of the table. Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman was part of the Atlético squad that suffered the home setback.

African interest was strongest in Istanbul. Victor Osimhen started and played the full 90 minutes as Galatasaray beat Stuttgart 2-0. The Nigerian striker was a constant threat and recorded multiple attempts, yet it was Russian midfielder Aleksei Batrakov who scored both goals inside the opening 15 minutes. The win ended a long home drought against German sides and boosted Galatasaray’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
Further afield Inter Milan brushed aside Feyenoord 3-0, Sporting Lisbon edged Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 through Issa Doumbia, and LASK thrashed Slovak side Slovan Bratislava 4-0. Nigerian forward Moses Usor was involved for the Austrian winners. Bodø/Glimt and Lille played out a goalless draw in Norway.

The night belonged to the big clubs and the late drama at Old Trafford, but African talent once again left its mark. Osimhen’s tireless shift, Mbeumo’s near-miss, Lookman’s presence in Madrid and Usor’s contribution in Austria underlined the continent’s growing influence on Europe’s premier club competition. With more fixtures still to come on Wednesday, the league phase remains wide open and full of intrigue.
