Elina Svitolina stunned Coco Gauff to win the Italian Open title after a hard-fought 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 victory in the final on Saturday.
The triumph marks Svitolina’s third Italian Open crown and the 20th title of her professional career, completing an impressive return to the top level of women’s tennis.
Speaking after the victory, the Ukrainian admitted the moment felt emotional as she reflected on her previous success in Rome.

“It’s very hard to believe that it’s been eight years when I had this trophy here and very, very, very pleased of course with the two weeks here,” she said.
Svitolina also revealed a conversation with her coach about reaching a milestone before the end of her career.
“I told my coach that it would be nice before I finish my career to have a round number. So he told me that hopefully we’re going to get this this year. So, I’m very, very happy.”
Despite the defeat, Gauff praised her opponent following another intense encounter between the pair.

“Another tough battle between us, I’m on the other side but hopefully one of these days I can get over that.”
The American also congratulated Svitolina and her team for their impressive run to the title.
“You had an incredible tournament a lot of long matches against great players so congratulations to you and your team.”

Gauff later admitted she failed to make the most of key moments during the final.
“Today’s definitely a match I learned from,” she said.
“I gave myself a lot of opportunities and just didn’t really capitalize on them.
“Played way too passive in certain moments.
“Just a learning experience for next time.”
Both players will now turn their attention to the upcoming French Open, scheduled to take place from May 24 to June 7, 2026.
