Nigeria’s Premier League contingent delivered solid shifts on a busy Saturday as several Super Eagles-bound players clocked important minutes ahead of this month’s crucial AFCON qualifying double-header against Tanzania.

With the international break looming, the performances of Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi and others offered encouraging signs for head coach Éric Chelle’s squad.

Leeds United edged Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 at Elland Road thanks to a late Noah Okafor strike, while Arsenal scraped past Hull City 1-0 at the Emirates through Martin Ødegaard’s second-half winner.

At Craven Cottage, Fulham and Newcastle United shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw after Jacob Murphy’s late opener was cancelled out by Rodrigo Muniz.

The Nigerian interest centered heavily on Fulham’s two Super Eagles regulars. Alex Iwobi started in midfield and put in a typically industrious shift as the Cottagers fought back for a point.

The experienced playmaker continues to be a creative hub for Álvaro Arbeloa’s side, linking play and driving forward with purpose. Alongside him, Calvin Bassey anchored the defence with characteristic composure and physical presence.

The centre-back’s reliability has been a cornerstone of Fulham’s recent improvement, and his ability to deal with Newcastle’s attacking threats once again underlined why he remains a first-choice option for both club and country.

At the Emirates, Semi Ajayi was a defensive mainstay for Hull City in their narrow defeat to Arsenal.

The powerful centre-back, who has been a consistent performer since Hull’s return to the top flight, put in another full shift against the league leaders.

While Hull could not find a way past David Raya, Ajayi’s aerial dominance and organisational qualities helped keep the scoreline respectable against a high-quality Arsenal attack. His experience will be vital for the Super Eagles as they prepare for the Tanzania tests.

Taiwo Awoniyi had already completed his weekend duties on Friday night, starting and playing 87 minutes in Coventry City’s 3-1 loss to Everton. The striker was involved in the build-up to Coventry’s goal and showed sharp movement, even if clear-cut chances proved elusive.

His recent goal against Sunderland and continued involvement keep him firmly in Chelle’s plans.

These club performances arrive at the perfect time. Chelle named a 24-man Super Eagles squad on Saturday that includes Iwobi, Bassey, Ajayi, Awoniyi and several other Premier League-linked or Europe-based talents.

Captain Wilfred Ndidi, Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon and others complete a competitive group for the home-and-away AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Tanzania on 13 and 17 November.

Nigeria sit in a tight Group L and need maximum points from the Tanzania double-header to strengthen their path to the finals.

The minutes and form shown by the Premier League contingent this weekend provide a timely boost. Iwobi’s creativity, Bassey’s defensive steel, Ajayi’s leadership at the back and Awoniyi’s work rate up front give Chelle reliable options as the Eagles look to take control of their qualifying fate.

As the players head into camp, the message from England is clear: Nigeria’s Premier League stars are match-sharp and ready to deliver when the Super Eagles need them most. Fans will be watching closely as the AFCON qualification campaign hits a decisive phase.
