Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi showed flashes of quality for Coventry City in their Premier League clash against Everton on Friday night, yet the Sky Blues could not hold on as the Toffees staged a dramatic second-half recovery to claim a 3-1 victory at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Frank Onyeka, the Super Eagles midfielder, missed the fixture through a groin injury and was unavailable for selection. His absence left Coventry without one of their more energetic midfield options as they faced David Moyes’ side, who equalled a club managerial record with the result.

Awoniyi started up front and completed 86 minutes. He was lively on the break, held the ball up effectively at times, and played a key role in the move that led to Coventry’s goal.

Early in the second half the Nigerian forward was involved when Jack Rudoni released him, and he went down under contact from Vitalii Mykolenko inside or on the edge of the area.

Referee Stuart Attwell waved play on, and VAR confirmed the challenge began outside the box, denying Coventry a penalty. Manager Frank Lampard later insisted it should have been given.

Moments later Coventry took a deserved lead. Awoniyi and Rudoni combined again, the latter feeding Yann Gboho, who produced a sharp finish past Jordan Pickford in the 52nd minute despite being surrounded by defenders. It was a well-worked goal that rewarded Coventry’s bright start to the half and Awoniyi’s link-up play.

The lead lasted just four minutes. Thierno Barry equalised with a powerful header from Mykolenko’s cross, then scrambled home a second shortly afterwards to make it 2-1. Barry turned provider late on, threading a precise pass for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to smash home the third in the 81st minute. Everton climbed to fifth in the table with the win, while Coventry remained 16th.

Awoniyi was rated around 6 by local observers for his efforts. He had some strong moments and looked increasingly sharp, but Coventry’s intensity dropped after the equaliser and they struggled to create further clear chances.

Three controversial VAR decisions—including the Awoniyi penalty claim and an earlier hair-pull incident involving James Tarkowski—left Lampard frustrated, with the former Everton boss saying the technology “didn’t do its job.”

The result marked a solid individual display from Awoniyi in a losing cause and highlighted the challenge facing newly promoted Coventry. With Onyeka set to return after the international break, the Sky Blues will look to the Super Eagles duo to help steady their campaign.

Everton, meanwhile, head into the break on a high after a third successive win and a landmark night for Moyes.
