Victor Osimhen will miss Nigeria’s upcoming AFCON 2027 qualifying matches after his recovery from a muscle strain progressed slower than expected, dealing a major setback to the Super Eagles.

The Galatasaray striker had been named in the Super Eagles squad for the September international window.

Both the Turkish club and Super Eagles technical staff remained optimistic that Osimhen would regain full fitness in time for Galatasaray’s Süper Lig clash against Trabzonspor and subsequently feature in the AFCON qualifiers.

Those hopes have now been dashed.

Osimhen’s absence from Galatasaray’s match, which they lost 3-0, confirmed the club’s formal correspondence to Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle.

Galatasaray informed the Nigeria coaching staff that the 27-year-old forward is still recovering and will not be available for the national team’s fixture against Madagascar.

The muscle strain, sustained earlier in the season, has proven more stubborn than initially assessed.

Medical reports indicate the injury has limited Osimhen’s training intensity, preventing him from reaching the required match sharpness.

While the striker continues rehabilitation under Galatasaray’s medical team, timelines for a full return remain uncertain.

For Nigeria, the news represents a significant blow.

Osimhen has been the Super Eagles’ primary goal threat in recent campaigns, combining aerial power, pace and clinical finishing.

His absence forces coach Eric Chelle to reshape the attacking options, likely elevating other forwards within the squad for the crucial AFCON qualifying encounters.

Nigeria sits in a tricky qualifying group and can ill-afford dropped points.

The Super Eagles technical crew had counted on Osimhen’s presence to spearhead the attack and provide leadership in the final third.

Without him, the side must rely on collective performance and tactical adjustments to maintain their push for a place at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Galatasaray, meanwhile, will also feel the impact as they navigate domestic and European commitments without their star striker.

The club has stressed that Osimhen’s long-term fitness remains the priority, avoiding any risk of aggravating the injury.

Osimhen’s consistent scoring record for both club and country had raised expectations of a strong showing in the qualifiers.

His prolonged recovery now shifts attention to how quickly he can return to full training and competitive action.

The Super Eagles will proceed without their talismanic forward for the upcoming matches.

All eyes now turn to the remaining squad members as Nigeria seeks to secure vital points in the AFCON qualifying campaign while awaiting positive updates on Victor Osimhen’s recovery.
