Following the just concluded international break, an incident involving Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface, took place in the Bundesliga and Bayer Leverkusen manager, Carles Martínez has addressed the issue.

Boniface reportedly stormed down the tunnel after realising he would not feature in the club's 4-3 victory over Mainz.

The Nigerian striker was warming up on the touchline during Sunday's encounter when Martínez made his final two substitutions in the 84th minute, leaving Boniface without an opportunity to enter the game.

The 25-year-old reportedly reacted by heading straight down the tunnel instead of returning to the bench after it became clear that he would not be called upon.

Speaking after the match, Martínez said he had not noticed the incident while concentrating on the game but confirmed that he would speak with the forward if the reports were accurate.

The Leverkusen manager also admitted that he could understand Boniface's frustration, explaining that every player wants to contribute to the team's success, even though selection decisions remain the responsibility of the coaching staff.

Martínez Reacts to Boniface's Tunnel Walk

Martínez revealed that he was unaware of Boniface's reaction during the match, as his attention was focused on the action on the pitch.

The coach said he would address the situation directly with the Nigerian international rather than immediately drawing conclusions about his conduct.

“I didn't know. I was focusing the game. I didn't check it.”

He added:

“If he did it, of course, we will talk with him."
"Is that? I don't know. I didn't know, so we will talk with him.”

The manager intends to establish exactly what happened before discussing the matter with the forward.

Although Boniface's reported reaction has attracted attention, Martínez did not announce any disciplinary action against the striker.

Leverkusen Boss Understands Boniface's Frustration

While Martínez made it clear that he would speak with Boniface, he acknowledged that the striker's potential frustration was understandable.

The coach recognised that players naturally want to help their teammates and make an impact on matches, particularly when they are eager for playing time.

However, he shared that making substitutions and deciding which players feature are part of his responsibilities as manager.

Martínez said:

“And of course, it's something that I can understand frustration."
"I can understand that everybody want to help, but of course, also it's part of that. It's part that take decisions.”
“And in this moment, I took this, like another day maybe will be completely different.”

This explains Martínez's position that, selection decisions are made according to the circumstances of each match and that a player's role can change from one game to another.

Boniface's Limited Playing Time Raises Questions

Boniface's reported reaction comes amid a difficult period in terms of playing time at Bayer Leverkusen, with the Super Eagles forward having featured for just five minutes for the club this season.

The lack of opportunities represents a frustrating situation for a striker who will be eager to establish himself and contribute more regularly to the team's campaign.

His failure to enter the Mainz game, despite warming up, added another layer to the situation, particularly as Leverkusen were involved in a closely contested encounter that ended 4-3 in their favour.

However, Martínez's remarks indicate that the immediate priority is to speak with the Nigerian and understand his reaction rather than rush to judgement.

Whether the incident will have any effect on Boniface's future opportunities remains to be seen.

Leverkusen Secure Seven-Goal Thriller Against Mainz

Leverkusen's 4-3 victory over Mainz provided an entertaining contest, with both sides combining for seven goals.

Boniface, however, did not get the opportunity to contribute on the pitch, as Martínez used his final substitutions without introducing the Nigerian forward.

The result gave Leverkusen the victory, but the attention surrounding Boniface's reported tunnel walk has created an additional talking point following the game.

For now, Martínez has indicated that he understands the frustration players can experience when they are unable to help the team, while maintaining that substitution decisions are part of his job.

The coming days could provide further clarity on the conversation between the manager and Boniface, as the striker looks to earn more minutes and return to a more prominent role at Leverkusen.
