The 2026/27 UEFA Conference League (UECL) golden boot race is wide open after Matchday 3, with a six-way tie at the summit highlighting the competition’s unpredictability and attacking quality.
Six players sit on three goals each: Albian Ajeti (Lugano), Tolu Arokodare (Ajax), Niklas Castro (Brann), Cyriel Dessers (Panathinaikos), Djú Franculino (Trabzonspor), and Noah Holm (Brann). Nineteen others trail on two goals as the league phase intensifies.

Nigerian players are firmly in the spotlight. Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare (Ajax, on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers) netted in both halves of Ajax’s emphatic 6-1 thrashing of Midtjylland, taking his tally to three and joining the joint-leaders.
The Lagos-born forward has adapted quickly in Amsterdam, contributing across competitions and continuing Nigeria’s strong tradition at the club.
Even more significant is Cyriel Dessers of Panathinaikos. The experienced Nigerian forward scored a brace against Kairat Almaty on Matchday 2, lifting him into the current top-scorer group and equalling the all-time UECL record of 13 goals (group/league phase to final) shared with Lech Pozna?’s Mikael Ishak.

Dessers first rose to prominence by claiming the inaugural 2021/22 Golden Boot with 10 goals for Feyenoord. Another Nigerian, Gift Orban (formerly of Gent), ranks high on the all-time list with 10 goals.
History of the UEFA Conference League
Launched in the 2021/22 season as the UEFA Europa Conference League, the competition was created to expand European club football opportunities, especially for teams from lower-ranked associations. It sits as the third tier behind the Champions League and Europa League.
Originally featuring a group stage of 32 teams, it was rebranded simply as the UEFA Conference League from 2024/25 and switched to a 36-team league phase in which each side plays six matches (three home, three away).
The top eight advance directly to the round of 16, while teams ranked 9–24 enter knockout play-offs. The winner earns a place in the following season’s Europa League league phase (unless already qualified higher).
Past seasonal top scorers include Cyriel Dessers (10 goals, 2021/22), Zeki Amdouni and Arthur Cabral (7 each, 2022/23), Ayoub El Kaabi (11, 2023/24), Afimico Pululu (8, 2024/25), and Ismaïla Sarr (9, 2025/26). The competition has delivered drama, giant-killings, and pathways for emerging talents and mid-tier clubs.
Nigerians have left a lasting mark. Dessers’ inaugural Golden Boot and current status as joint all-time leading scorer stand as major achievements. Orban’s 10 goals further underline Nigerian goalscoring prowess in the competition.

With Arokodare and Dessers both among the 2026/27 leaders early on, Super Eagles fans have plenty of reasons to follow every Matchday.
As the league phase continues toward the knockout rounds and the 2027 final in Istanbul, these Nigerian stars are writing the next chapter of UECL history while chasing individual and collective glory.
The race remains wide open, but Nigerian firepower is already lighting up the UECL top scorers standings.
