Nigeria’s Falconets have gone from fighting for survival to facing England in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup knockout stage after a stunning 10-1 demolition of New Caledonia secured their place in the last 16.
Moses Aduku’s side finished second in Group F with four points, behind Spain, who topped the group with nine points.
The massive victory completely changed the mood around Nigeria’s campaign.
After opening the tournament with a 2-0 defeat to Spain and then being held to a goalless draw by China, the Falconets needed a major response in their final group game.
They delivered one in spectacular fashion but the reward is a far tougher challenge.
England await in the Round of 16
From Group-Stage Trouble to 10-goal Statement
Nigeria wasted little time against New Caledonia.
Ramotalahi Kareem opened the scoring from the penalty spot before continuing her remarkable afternoon with two more goals to complete a hat-trick.
Winner Onajite David also found the net three times, while Rebecca Adegbemile scored twice.
Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Tosin Rafiu completed the scoring for Nigeria.
New Caledonia's Joceline Kourevi provided a moment of history for the Oceania debutants, scoring their first goal of the tournament with a superb long-range effort.
The final score was Nigeria 10-1 New Caledonia.
The result not only secured Nigeria's knockout place but also provided a huge goal-difference boost after their difficult opening two matches.
Kareem: ‘We’re ready for England’
Kareem was one of the biggest stars of the victory and was delighted to contribute three goals.
“My job is to score goals and help the team, and I’m over the moon to have done that today,” Kareem told FIFA after the match.
“I’m delighted with my hat-trick. Now we’re hoping to make a real impact after getting out of the group stage.”
The forward knows, however, that England will represent a completely different challenge.
“We’re ready for the England game. We’ll prepare as well as we possibly can to take on a strong side,” Kareem added.
She later reiterated her determination to help Nigeria make a deep run.
“We hope to achieve great things now that we’ve got through the group stage. I’m really pleased with my hat-trick."

"We’re ready for the match against England. We’ll prepare as well as we possibly can for the Round of 16 against a strong side.”
Aduku Admits Falconets Still Have a Problem
Despite the 10-goal explosion, Aduku knows Nigeria cannot afford to carry the defensive weaknesses that have appeared during the group stage into the knockout rounds.
The coach welcomed the attacking performance but warned that improvements are still required.
“We’re really happy with the goals we scored. We wanted to get through to the last 16, and we’ve shown that we can do it."
"We’ve shipped a few too many goals in this tournament so far, so we’ll be looking to shore things up at the back.”
That warning could prove crucial against England.
A 10-1 victory against New Caledonia showcased Nigeria's attacking strength, but the knockout stage offers no room for defensive lapses.
Aduku knows the stakes.
“It’s going to be a tough test,” the coach concluded.
“If you want to be crowned champions, you’ve got to win every game. We’re ready for the challenge.”
England Stand between Nigeria and the Quarter-finals
England also advanced as runners-up from Group B.
Brazil topped the group, while England finished second with four points, edging Canada for the runners-up position because of their superior team conduct record.
That means the Falconets now face a side that, like Nigeria, survived a competitive group and will believe it has a genuine chance of progressing.
The last-16 meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 17, in Bielsko-Biala.
For Nigeria, the challenge is clear: the New Caledonia performance must become a launchpad rather than an isolated explosion.

Despite the heavy defeat, Kourevi's goal gave New Caledonia something historic to celebrate.
It was their first goal at their first FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.
