Falconets Rampage Hides a Bigger Problem as Nigeria Survive Group-Stage Scare

Nigeria’s Falconets finally found their attacking firepower when it mattered most, smashing New Caledonia 10-1 to reach the round of 16 at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup; but the spectacular victory also exposed how close the two-time runners-up came to an early exit.

Moses Aduku’s side turned the W?adys?aw Król Municipal Stadium in ?ód? into a goal festival on Sunday, producing their biggest victory of the tournament against Oceania debutants, New Caledonia.

But beneath the breathtaking scoreline was a very different story.

After losing 2-0 to Spain in their opening game and drawing 0-0 with China, Nigeria entered the final Group F fixture knowing they needed a strong result to rescue their campaign.

They responded with ten goals.

And suddenly, the team that had struggled to score in its opening two matches looked almost unstoppable.

Kareem Starts the Demolition

Nigeria dominated from the opening whistle and quickly pinned New Caledonia deep inside their own half.

The breakthrough arrived in the 17th minute when Tosin Rafiu brilliantly tricked her way past three opponents before winning a penalty.

Ramotalahi Kareem stepped up and calmly stroked the spot-kick home.

Two minutes later, Rebecca Adegbemile doubled the advantage with a header before Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei added another headed goal in the 23rd minute.

Kareem then struck again in the 27th minute following more excellent work from Rafiu, giving Nigeria a commanding 4-0 lead before half-time.

What had been a must-win encounter was rapidly becoming a rout.

New Caledonia Briefly Fight Back

There was little New Caledonia could do to stop Nigeria's relentless pressure, although Joceline Kourevi eventually gave the debutants something to celebrate.

With nine minutes remaining, Kourevi produced a superb long-range strike to score New Caledonia's first goal of the tournament.

It was a moment of consolation in an otherwise brutal afternoon for the Oceania side.

By then, however, Nigeria had already turned the contest into a one-sided affair.

Six More Goals after the Break

Rather than ease off, the Falconets increased the tempo after the restart.

Kareem completed her hat-trick in the 64th minute, while Winner Onajite David scored twice in quick succession to also claim a treble.

Adegbemile completed her brace in the 74th minute before Rafiu capped her outstanding performance with a stunning strike from outside the box.

Kareem Leads the Charge

Kareem finished the afternoon with three goals, including the opening penalty, and was named the Visa Player of the Match.

Her hat-trick, combined with David's treble and Adegbemile's two goals, underlined the attacking depth Nigeria had been unable to display during their first two group matches.

A Spectacular Rescue after a Worrying Start

The 10-1 victory is Nigeria's biggest win of the tournament, but perhaps its most important value is the goal difference it provided after a difficult start.

The Falconets began the competition with a defeat against European champions Spain before failing to score against China.

For a team with Nigeria's history at the U-20 Women's World Cup (including two runners-up finishes) the opening two matches raised uncomfortable questions about whether another deep tournament run was slipping away.

Against New Caledonia, those concerns disappeared in spectacular fashion.

A side that had scored zero goals in its previous match suddenly scored ten.

That contrast is what makes the result so intriguing: Nigeria did not gradually grow into the tournament. They exploded into life when their qualification hopes were on the line.

England Now Await

Qualification is now secured, but the real examination begins in the knockout stages.

Nigeria will face England in the round of 16, with the Falconets hoping their extraordinary attacking display against New Caledonia was the beginning of genuine momentum rather than simply a response to facing an overmatched opponent.
