Boboye regrets missing out on Atlanta 96 Olympics winning Squad

Akwa United coach Kennedy Boboye has opened up on how he missed out on the opportunity of representing Nigeria at the 1996 Olympics games in Atlanta, USA.

 

Boboye who was part of the team that qualified Nigeria’s Dream Team for the tournament revealed he narrowly missed out on the team after failing to recover from the injury he sustained from a car accident.

 

 

Boboye who is now enjoying his coaching career in the Nigerian professional football league played in all the Olympics qualifiers, except for the last game due to the injury.

 

 

“I played in all d qualifiers for ’96 Olympics except the last game because of car accident injuries. I didn’t recover on time to make the squad to Atlanta & that ruled me out of having an Olympic gold medal around my neck. That’s my biggest regret ever. I thank God for life though.” Boboye said in a tweet.

 

 

After missing out of the tournament, Boboye watched from home as his teammates went all the way to clinch the goal medal after defeating Argentina 3-2 in the final.

 

 

After the injury Boboye signed for Saint-Denis Saint-Leu football club, Paris where he only spent a season before signing for Fortuna Düsseldorf.

 

 

He later left the team after his contract expired teed up Uerdingen 05 in as a free agent.

 

 

However, after several years abroad he returned to Africa and signed for Manning Rangers F.C. in South Africa till 2004 from where he moved to Dolphins F.C. ( River United).
