Frank Onyeka delivered an assured midfield performance on his debut for Coventry City in a crucial 3-1 home league victory over fellow promotion contenders Middlesbrough F.C.
A clinical hat-trick from Haji Wright secured all three points for Coventry, but Onyeka’s contribution in the middle of the park proved equally significant.
The Nigerian midfielder was substituted in the 75th minute after an energetic and disciplined display.
His numbers reflected his influence
Eight completed passes, four into the final third, a 100 percent dribble success rate, two blocks, two clearances, two interceptions, five ball recoveries, and six ground duels won.
Beyond the statistics, Onyeka brought composure and balance, helping his side regain control during key moments and preventing Boro from dictating possession in their usual manner.
His defensive awareness and timely tackles consistently halted Middlesbrough’s forward momentum.
When he left the pitch, the home supporters rose in appreciation, giving him a standing ovation in recognition of an impressive first outing in Coventry colours.

Fans also adapted a familiar terrace chant in his honour, remixing a popular song associated with head coach Frank Lampard:
🎵 Super, Super Frank
Super, Super Frank
Super, Super Frank
Super Frank Onyeka 🎵
After the match, Lampard praised Onyeka’s impact and intelligence.
“Yes, absolutely. It was brilliant. His performance, his power in winning the ball, his quality of understanding when to jump and press, and what he’s like in duels, but also his quality of play.”
Lampard also commended the midfielder for managing the game effectively after receiving a first-half booking.

“It was a massive performance from him, and he gets a booking, it’s never a booking,” Lampard insisted.
“I’m thinking, if he tires, is he going to come off? But I thought he dealt with that situation well. An outstanding debut. To come from the Premier League and step up to this level of game so quickly… was a great sign. I am really pleased for him.”
The result lifts Coventry to the summit of the EFL Championship table with 62 points, while Middlesbrough sit just behind on 61, intensifying the promotion race as the season gathers momentum.
