Portugal Football Federation (FPF) president, Pedro Proença has thrown his support behind Cristiano Ronaldo amid the forward’s dispute with national team coach Jorge Jesus.

The federation stated that the 41-year-old remains a key figure for the country and expressing confidence that the pair will resolve their differences.

Proença described Ronaldo as "the greatest asset Portuguese football has ever produced", reaffirming the federation’s belief in its captain despite the controversy surrounding his decision to leave the national team camp during the recent international break.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward was provisionally suspended by the FPF after walking out of the squad following a disagreement with Jesus over his playing time.

The federation subsequently fined Ronaldo €255 ($285.90) and handed him a 30-day suspension after considering the circumstances surrounding the incident.
However, the punishment is not expected to prevent him from featuring in Portugal’s upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Wales in November.

Speaking at a meeting at the town hall in Funchal, Ronaldo’s birthplace, during an FPF event, Proença made it clear that the federation continues to regard the veteran forward as central to the national team.

"We are in the home of the greatest asset Portuguese football has ever produced: Cristiano Ronaldo, our captain," Proença said.
"Our captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, is one of our key pieces."

Proença Backs Ronaldo to Resolve Rift With Jorge Jesus

A confident Proença assured that Ronaldo would settle his differences with Jesus and return to the Portugal squad, suggesting that the disagreement would not permanently damage the captain’s relationship with the national team.

The dispute emerged during the recent international break, when Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp ahead of the meeting with Denmark after being left on the bench against Norway.

Ronaldo reportedly became frustrated after Jesus asked him to prepare to play 30 minutes against Norway but subsequently failed to introduce him during the match.

The disagreement was particularly significant because Jesus had coached Ronaldo at Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr during the previous season, when the pair worked together in the Saudi Pro League.

Ronaldo subsequently accused the coach of breaking his promise over the playing time he had been offered.

Despite the public nature of the disagreement, Proença remains confident that the relationship can be repaired and that Ronaldo will continue representing Portugal.

The federation president’s comments provide a strong indication that the governing body does not intend to allow the controversy to overshadow Ronaldo’s importance to the national team.

Ronaldo Accuses Jesus of ‘Breaking His Word’

Following his departure from the Portugal camp, Ronaldo issued a statement explaining his version of events and accusing Jesus of failing to honour an agreement concerning his expected involvement against Norway.

The forward said he had been concentrating on his physical recovery and had initially expected to remain on the bench because of his training schedule.

However, he claimed that Jesus subsequently approached him with a request to play 30 minutes, prompting him to prepare for an appearance.

"To my absolute surprise, the coach asked me whether I was ready to play 30 minutes [against Norway]," Ronaldo said.
"I was completely focused on my physical recovery, integrated with my teammates as always, and thinking that I would not play that day."
"I had no problem with that.
"This request was outside my physical recovery and training plan, because I was only supposed to play on Oct. 4 at the Dragão, but obviously I said yes."
"He told me to be prepared because I would play 30 minutes."
"Everyone knows what happened next. I warmed up from halftime, watched the minutes go by, and was not called upon."
"The coach had broken his word to me."

Ronaldo’s frustration stemmed not simply from being left out of the starting line-up but from his belief that an agreement had been reached regarding his involvement.

The forward subsequently left the national team camp before the Denmark fixture, prompting the FPF to launch disciplinary proceedings.

The incident attracted considerable attention because of Ronaldo’s status as Portugal’s captain and all-time leading goalscorer, as well as the uncertainty it created over his immediate international future.

Ronaldo Wants to Continue Playing for Portugal

Despite his rift Jesus, Ronaldo made it clear that he remained committed to Portugal and would accept whatever disciplinary measures the federation decided to impose.

The FPF initially provisionally suspended the forward before announcing a fine of €255 and a 30-day suspension.

The fine represented the maximum amount permitted under the applicable disciplinary provisions after mitigating circumstances were taken into account.

According to the disciplinary decision, Ronaldo’s admission of responsibility and clean disciplinary record helped reduce the punishment.

The 30-day suspension is not expected to rule him out of Portugal’s November Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Wales, meaning the captain could return to international action if selected.

Ronaldo’s willingness to accept the punishment, coupled with his stated desire to continue representing his country, has strengthened the possibility of a return once the dispute with Jesus is resolved.

The federation president publicly backing the forward rather than suggesting that the incident had brought his international career to an end.

Portugal Face Denmark and Wales as Ronaldo’s Return Looms

Portugal have two Nations League matches scheduled for November, against Denmark and Wales, with Ronaldo potentially available for selection following the disciplinary action.

The fixtures will provide an opportunity for the national team to move beyond the controversy and focus on its competitive commitments.

Ronaldo’s potential return will also depend on the outcome of his relationship with Jesus and the coach’s selection decisions.

The forward’s dispute with the manager has placed the spotlight on the balance between his standing as Portugal’s captain and the coach’s authority over team selection and playing time.

Ronaldo Remains Portugal’s Biggest Football Figure

Ronaldo’s influence on Portuguese football extends far beyond his performances on the pitch.

The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus star has spent more than two decades at the highest level, becoming Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer and one of the most recognisable athletes in the world.

According to Forbes, Ronaldo is also the world’s highest-paid athlete, with estimated earnings of $300 million over the previous year.

His achievements and commercial influence have made him a central figure in Portugal’s sporting identity, helping explain why the federation continues to emphasise his importance despite the recent disciplinary controversy.

Nevertheless, the latest dispute raises questions about how his international career will develop as he continues to play at 41.

Proença remains convinced that Ronaldo’s relationship with Jesus can be repaired and that the captain will return to the national team.
