Former Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong has called for greater consistency and structure across Nigerian football, warning that the country can no longer depend solely on its abundance of talented players.

Troost-Ekong believes the Super Eagles have reached a point where the Nigerian Football Federation, coaching staff and players must work within a clear and consistent system if the team is to compete successfully in Africa and beyond.

The former Udinese defender acknowledged the quality available to Nigeria but argued that talent alone cannot continue to cover weaknesses within the national team setup.

‘We Need To See Some Consistency’ - Troost-Ekong

Troost-Ekong pointed to consistency from the federation to the coaching staff and the players as one of the biggest requirements for the Super Eagles moving forward.

“We're at a point where we need to see some consistency, I think, from the top down."
"I'm talking from federation to coach to this group of players."
" I think the talent is there in abundance.”

According to the former captain, there remains uncertainty around how preparations for the national team are handled, making long-term planning increasingly important.

He believes the decision to retain Eric Chelle represents a positive step because it provides the coach with the opportunity to build a team rather than constantly start over.

“I think what we're seeing now is still some uncertainty about how things are prepared for the team."
"I think that appointing Eric Chelle now for the long term has been a great thing to do."
"He's also in charge of the Olympic team.”

Troost-Ekong also highlighted Chelle’s understanding of Nigeria’s emerging generation, pointing to the impact of young players such as George Ilenikhena.

“He understands the young players coming through"
" We had some fantastic players that showed themselves and had a great debut, especially against Madagascar, scoring a winning goal."
"So that consistency is number one.”

‘We Can’t Just Rely on the Talent Alone’ - Troost-Ekong Cries

While praising Nigeria’s pool of players, Troost-Ekong insisted that the country needs a stronger structure around the Super Eagles.

He believes Nigeria’s talent has previously helped mask problems within the setup, but warned that those weaknesses will eventually become impossible to ignore.

“But I do think that the team needs the structure and the backbone."
"And we can't just rely on the talent alone, because I think we've managed to cover a lot of gaps over the years."
"But now, over time, those things will get exposed.”

For Troost-Ekong, the solution is not simply finding more talented players. The entire environment surrounding the team must be strong enough to allow those players to perform at their best.

“And yeah, they need to have the right structure around it, because for any team playing in Africa, the level is continuously increasing as well from the other teams."
" So you need to make sure that you give yourself the best opportunity to win.”

Eric Chelle Faces The Challenge of Building Consistency

Chelle’s continued presence gives Nigeria an opportunity to establish the stability Troost-Ekong believes has been missing.

The Franco-Malian coach has been given a longer-term role with the national setup and is also involved with the Olympic team, giving him the chance to work with both established Super Eagles stars and younger players coming through the system.

For Troost-Ekong, that continuity could become important if Nigeria are to avoid the uncertainty that has affected the team in recent years.

He wants the Super Eagles to approach their qualifiers with greater seriousness from the beginning rather than waiting until they are under pressure.

“And I think now with this coach, hopefully they can find some consistency and take the qualifiers serious from the beginning."
"And then I think we're all going to see some great things from Nigeria again.”

For a country that continues to produce elite footballers, Troost-Ekong believes that may be the difference between having talent and turning that talent into sustained success.

His message is that the talent must be supported by;

- a clear structure,

- consistent administration and

- long-term planning from the top down.

This is currently a time when expectations remain high around the Super Eagles, with Nigeria possessing a squad packed with established stars and promising young players.
