Super Eagles and Venezia striker, Akor Adams has insisted that Nigeria have not lost sight of what they represent despite their recent setback against Guinea-Bissau.
The Super Eagles suffered a heavy defeat in their previous outing, but Adams says the squad is already focused on improving, integrating the new players in camp and raising the overall quality of the team ahead of their international friendly against Russia.
With several new faces joining the squad, the striker believes the current camp is also an opportunity to build greater competition and strengthen the team for future challenges.
‘It’s Still the Super Eagles’ - Akor Adams
Adams welcomed the new players in camp while making it clear that the identity and expectations surrounding the national team remain unchanged.
“For us now, there are a lot of new boys in camp."
"I'm happy for them and congratulations for those who are going to make their debut in advance."
"But it's still the Super Eagles and we know what we stand for.”
The striker also acknowledged that the Russia friendly presents another opportunity for the team to respond after the disappointing result against Guinea-Bissau.
According to Adams, head coach Eric Chelle has made the objective clear to the players despite the match being a friendly.
“The coach has made it clear that we are here to try our best to win."
"Russia is a very good team as well and I think they're very hungry to play games, you know, because of their peculiar situation and for us it's to give our best."
"I know Nigerians are watching.”
‘Nigerians Love the Super Eagles’ - Akor Adams
Adams knows that the importance of the match goes beyond its status as a friendly.
With the Guinea-Bissau defeat still fresh, the striker understands that Nigerian supporters will expect a response from the Super Eagles and a performance capable of restoring confidence.
He also pointed to the passion of Nigerian football fans and their connection with the national team.
“They love football a lot and they love the Super Eagles a lot and come out with a good result and also a good performance.”
Therefore, the Russia encounter is about more than simply getting minutes on the pitch for Adams and his teammates.
It is a chance to welcome the new players, continue building under Chelle and show that the Super Eagles can respond when results do not go their way.
Nigeria will be hoping for both a strong performance and a positive result as they look to put the Guinea-Bissau defeat behind them.
