Nigeria’s Flamingos will face Mexico in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after securing an impressive 3–1 victory over defending champions Korea DPR on Friday.
The Nigerian girls, coached by Akeem Busari, produced a superb performance to overcome the two-time champions, finish their Group B campaign with six points and book their place in the knockout stage.
The victory was particularly significant for Nigeria, who entered the final group fixture needing a strong result against a Korea DPR side that had won both of its opening matches and scored 12 goals while conceding just once.
However, the Flamingos rose to the challenge, handing the defending champions their first defeat of the tournament and setting up a last-16 meeting with Mexico.
Flamingos Set Up Mexico Clash
Nigeria will now turn their attention to Mexico as they seek to advance to the quarter-finals and continue their pursuit of a second podium finish at the competition.
The Flamingos, who won bronze at the 2022 edition, will head into the knockout stage with renewed confidence after demonstrating their ability to compete against one of the tournament’s strongest teams.
Their victory over Korea DPR also ended the North Koreans’ perfect start to the competition and strengthened Nigeria’s position among the teams capable of making a deep run in Morocco.
The meeting with Mexico presents another important test for Busari’s side, who will need to maintain the attacking quality and defensive discipline they displayed against the defending champions.
With the group stage now completed, Nigeria’s attention will be firmly on the knockout fixture, where victory is essential to keep their title ambitions alive.
Adegbuyi, Umejiaku and Yusuf Sink Defending Champions
The Flamingos made an early statement against Korea DPR, with Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opening the scoring in the 15th minute to give Nigeria the lead.
Nigeria continued to press and doubled their advantage three minutes before half-time when Oluebube Umejiaku finished off a fine assist from Tosin Rafiu in the 38th minute.
The goal gave the Flamingos a comfortable cushion heading into the break and left the defending champions with a difficult task in the second half.
Nigeria continued their impressive display after the restart, with Kanyinsola Yusuf extending the lead to 3–0 in the 56th minute through a superb free-kick.
The third goal put the Flamingos firmly in control and increased the pressure on Korea DPR, who had entered the match looking to maintain their unbeaten record.
The defending champions managed to pull one goal back in the 82nd minute through Yu Jong Hyang, but Nigeria held on to secure a memorable 3–1 victory.
Adegbuyi appeared to have added a fourth goal for Nigeria in the 88th minute, but the effort was ruled out following a video review after the referee identified a foul in the build-up.
The disallowed goal did little to take away from Nigeria’s achievement as the Flamingos secured one of their most important results of the tournament.
How Nigeria Reached the Round of 16
Nigeria’s qualification followed a mixed start to their Group B campaign.
The Flamingos began the tournament with a 2–1 defeat to Poland, leaving them under pressure to respond in their remaining fixtures.
They bounced back with a 2–0 victory over tournament debutants Puerto Rico to keep their qualification hopes alive before producing their best performance yet against Korea DPR.
The 3–1 victory over the defending champions took Nigeria to six points from three matches.
Poland also finished the group stage on six points after defeating Puerto Rico 6–2 in the other fixture.
Korea DPR likewise ended the group phase with six points, leaving all three teams level on points.
Despite the tight competition in Group B, Nigeria did enough to progress to the Round of 16, where they will now face Mexico.
Flamingos End Korea DPR’s Perfect Run
Korea DPR entered the match as one of the leading contenders for the trophy after winning their opening two games in convincing fashion.
The North Koreans have won the U-17 Women’s World Cup twice since the competition began in New Zealand in 2008 and were pursuing another title after their strong start in Morocco.
Their attacking threat had been evident in their first two matches, during which they scored 12 goals and conceded just one.
Nigeria, however, delivered the performance needed to halt their momentum, scoring three times before conceding a late goal.
The result also carried historical significance for the Flamingos, who had previously faced Korea DPR twice at the U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria won their first meeting 3–2 in 2010, while Korea DPR claimed a 3–0 victory when the sides met again in 2016.
