Awaziem and Co hold Nerves to squeeze past Celta Vigo in Relegation Battle

CD Leganes fought and won a spirited 3-2 victory over 10-men Celta Vigo in a Liga relegation scrap on Sunday at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque.

The victory is Leganes’s second of the season and the first for Manager Javier Aguirre since taking charge last Month.

Chidozie Awaziem played all 90 minutes in the center of a three-man back line, while Kenneth Omeruo was seated on the bench for the duration of the game.

The hosts got off the mark early, scoring in the 15th minute through Oscar Rodriguez with a fine free kick. He doubled with a long range effort in the 39th to lead them into the break.

After the resumption, Kevin Rodrigues scored (55′) Leganes’s third and they looked to be cruising to a much needed win against another relegation side.

However, the visitors pulled one back through Nestor Araujo (64′). And when it seemed like they could fight for a point, Gabriel Fernandez got a second booking and was given his marching orders.

Captain Iago Aspas would later score (81′) and led the shout for a penalty after Awaziem’s sliding tackle to keep out a shot appeared to have come off the defender’s arm.

But after consulting VAR, the Referee waved the appeals away and Aguirre’s men held on for the win.

They remain in the relegation zone in spite of the win and will try for another in five days at the Estadio de Mendizorroza against Deportivo Alavés.
