Dele Alli will miss England’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Slovenia at Wembley next week after being given a one-match ban by FIFA for an offensive gesture during the match against Slovakia.
Alli was included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the games against Slovenia and Lithuania despite the threat of a ban, but he will now only be available for the second game.
FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Alli for raising his middle finger during the qualifier vs Slovakia.
Video evidence was submitted along with written statements in a bid to back-up their argument that Alli’s ill-judged gesture was aimed at teammate Kyle Walker rather than the officials or any Slovakia player.
