The road to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is becoming clearer as the expanded tournament begins to separate contenders from pretenders.
With the introduction of a new 48-team format and a round of 32 for the first time in World Cup history, qualification scenarios have become significantly more complicated.
Unlike previous editions, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups automatically advance, while the eight best third-placed teams also progress to the knockout rounds.
As a result, many nations still have hope of extending their World Cup journey, while others are already staring at an early flight home.
So far, hosts Mexico and the United States, along with Germany, have officially booked their places in the knockout rounds.
At the other end of the spectrum, Haiti, Türkiye and Tunisia have already been eliminated.
With Matchday Three looming, here is the complete roadmap to the knockout stage.
How Teams Are Separated if They Finish Level on Points
According to FIFA regulations, if two or more teams finish level on points, the following tiebreakers apply:
Step One (Head-to-Head Criteria)
- Greatest number of points obtained in matches between the teams concerned.
- Superior goal difference in matches between the teams concerned.
- Greatest number of goals scored in matches between the teams concerned.
Step Two (Overall Group Record)
If teams remain level:
- Superior overall goal difference.
- Greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
- Highest disciplinary record based on yellow and red cards.
Step Three
If teams still cannot be separated:
- The latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking will determine positions.

GROUP A: Mexico Through, South Korea in Pole Position
Qualified: Mexico
Mexico became the first team in Group A to secure qualification after defeating South Korea.
El Tri have already guaranteed top spot and will face a third-placed team from Groups C, E, F, H or I in the Round of 32.
South Korea remain favourites to finish second.
A draw against South Africa will be enough to secure qualification regardless of Czechia’s result against Mexico due to their superior head-to-head record.
However, defeat against South Africa combined with a Czech victory over Mexico would see the Koreans crash from second to fourth and suffer elimination.
South Africa and Czechia kept their hopes alive following their 1-1 draw. Both nations now require victories in their final matches to realistically stand any chance of progressing.
