Super Falcons midfielder, Deborah Abiodun has urged parents in Africa, particularly Nigeria, to stop discouraging the girl child from playing football.
The Super Falcons star, speaking exclusively to Sports Radio Brila FM, opened up about her own struggles and the importance of supporting young girls in sports.
Abiodun, who now plays for Dallas Trinity on loan from Washington Spirit, admitted that her parents were initially against her playing football.
“It was a big struggle. My mom didn’t want me to play. It took a lot to convince her,” she revealed.
“I understand the stereotypes, especially in Nigeria, but parents need to know that football is not just a game—it can be a life-changing opportunity.”
The 20-year-old midfielder emphasized that beyond financial rewards, football brings happiness and fulfillment.
“Your child’s happiness should be your number one priority,” she stressed.
“It’s not about the money or fame. It’s about letting them do what they love. Parents should support their kids—whether it’s football or anything else.”
A Role Model for Nigerian Girls

Having risen from grassroots football in Nigeria to playing on the world’s biggest stages, Abiodun sees herself as a role model for young girls who aspire to play professionally.
“I’ve been in their shoes. Playing in Nigeria as a girl is tough. But if you believe in yourself and work hard, you can make it,” she said.
She also praised the impact of the Super Falcons’ senior players in guiding the next generation.
“I learn from them every day. They accepted us, the younger ones, and they teach us so much. That’s why I always say we must keep paving the way for the next set of young players.”
Her Advice to Aspiring Female Footballers

For young girls dreaming of becoming professional footballers, Abiodun had some words of encouragement.
She also advised them to find mentors who will support their journey.
“Never give up. I know it’s hard. I know there will be people who try to stop you. But keep pushing. Work hard, train hard, and believe in yourself.”
“Surround yourself with the right people. Have coaches, teammates, and even family members who believe in you. That support system is very important.”
Final Words for Parents
Before ending the interview, Abiodun made one final plea to Nigerian parents.
“Accept your child’s career choice with love. Support them, pray for the, and just be there.”
“Don’t kill their dreams, nurture them.”
