An Argentine court has officially begun the trial of seven healthcare professionals accused of negligence in the death of football icon Diego Maradona.
The case, which has captivated the football world since his passing in 2020, could see those found guilty face up to 25 years in prison.
Maradona, the legendary 1986 World Cup winner, suffered a fatal cardiac arrest on November 25, 2020, while recovering at a private residence outside Buenos Aires.
The prosecution argues that the medical team responsible for his care failed to provide adequate treatment, leading to his untimely death at the age of 60.
A Courtroom Filled With Emotion
Tuesday’s hearing was marked by emotional scenes as Maradona’s family members arrived in court, seeking justice for their beloved father and global football icon.
His eldest daughters, Dalma and Giannina, took seats in the front row alongside Verónica Ojeda, Maradona’s former partner, and Jana, another of his daughters.
Before the trial began, Ojeda shared a powerful video of Maradona’s youngest son, Diego Fernando, wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with his father’s face and the word “Justice.” The message was clear—his family wants answers.
Who Is on Trial?
At the center of the case is neurosurgeon Leonardo Luque, Maradona’s personal physician, who performed brain surgery on the football legend just weeks before his passing.
Prosecutors argue that Luque, along with six other medical professionals, was negligent in his post-surgical care.
Others standing trial include:
Agustina Cosachov (psychiatrist): Prescribed medication Maradona was taking until his death.
Carlos Díaz (psychologist): Responsible for Maradona’s mental health support.

Pedro Di Spagna (doctor): Monitored Maradona’s treatment.
Ricardo Almirón (nurse): One of the primary caregivers.
