Super Eagles and Rangers defender Leon Aderemi Balogun has addressed speculations about his international career, clarifying that he has not retired and remains available for selection whenever called upon.
Contrary to rumours of persistent injuries sidelining him, Balogun revealed that it was a single injury between November 2022 and March 2023 that prevented him from honouring call-ups during that period.
The injury, which was initially expected to heal within weeks, took much longer due to complications with his recovery.
However, since recovering in early 2023, Balogun has remained injury-free and ready to represent Nigeria.
The veteran defender’s last appearance for the Super Eagles came over two years ago during their historic 10-0 victory over São Tomé and Príncipe in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier held in Agadir, Morocco.
His absence since then has fueled rumours of retirement, with some fans questioning why the experienced defender hasn’t been called up, especially given the leadership and motivation he brings to the squad.
In an interview with Brila.net, Balogun addressed the injury that sidelined him, clarifying that it was a single, prolonged setback rather than multiple injuries.
“It’s not that I’ve not accepted an invitation ever.
Unfortunately, right before the World Cup break, I suffered an injury that was supposed to last a few weeks but didn’t go the way it was supposed to.
I just couldn’t come I was not fit yet and after I got fit, then I relapsed but since then I haven’t had a lengthy injury spell.”
Balogun further emphasized his commitment to the national team, confirming that he remains passionate about representing Nigeria and contributing to the team’s success.
“I have always been available. I’ve never said that I retired from international football, and I think the people who need to know are aware that I’m still very much willing and ambitious to represent the national team.”
Since making his debut for Nigeria in 2014, Balogun has earned 46 caps and scored one goal for the Super Eagles.
His experience and leadership remain valuable assets, and fans will hope to see him don the national colours again, especially with the World Cup qualifiers set to resume in March 2025.
