Former chairman of the Nigerian Football Federation’s, NFF Technical Committee, Barr. Chris Green, has expressed concerns over the readiness of the environment for Eric Chelle, the newly appointed Super Eagles head coach, to succeed.
Chelle’s appointment, announced on Tuesday, ends the prolonged period of uncertainty since Finidi George’s departure in June 2024. However, the decision has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, with some questioning whether the NFF has made the right choice.
In an interview with Brila.net, Green emphasized that hiring a coach is not enough to guarantee success. Instead, he highlighted the need for a proper structure and environment to support Chelle in achieving his mandate, particularly the crucial task of securing a 2026 FIFA World Cup ticket.
“Since the NFF has announced him, I hope they’ve also arranged the environment he will work in so that he can thrive and qualify us for the next World Cup,” Green said.
He also stressed the importance of player commitment and discipline, warning that Nigeria cannot afford to miss another World Cup.
“We have the talents, but we don’t know the mentality of the players, the discipline in the team, and the suitability of the coach to the Super Eagles,” Green added.
Chelle’s primary assignment will be to revive the Super Eagles’ fortunes in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers.
Nigeria currently sits winless in Group C after four matches and will resume their campaign in March with an away game against Rwanda’s Amavubi.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the USA, is a high-stakes target for Nigeria, and the young Malian tactician faces a daunting task to turn the tide for the three-time African champions.
