EXCLUSIVE: National Coach Akuh Purity Sets 2025 Agenda for Nigerian Wrestling Success

National wrestling coach Akuh Purity has outlined an ambitious roadmap for the Nigerian Wrestling Federation (NWF) in 2025, focusing on early preparations, talent discovery, and prioritizing major international competitions.

Speaking with Brila.net, Purity spoke on the importance of laying a solid foundation for long-term success, particularly with the 2028 Olympics in view.

He also stated the advantages of strategic planning to ensure Nigeria’s wrestling team remains competitive on the international stage.

Early Preparation for the 2028 Olympics

First, Purity highlighted the need to begin preparations for the 2028 Olympics immediately:

“The Nigerian Wrestling Federation, we are planning a very big preparation for our athletes in readiness for the 2028 Olympic Games.”

“We want to start early preparation, and this year we have a couple of international tournaments and national tournaments to attend.”

Focus on International and National Competition

The wrestling federation aims to organize and participate in several tournaments to boost athletes’ rankings and readiness.

“We are going to organise national tournaments and we are going to send our athletes to the ranking series in Arbenia, which is the second ranking series.”

“Then that will prepare us for the African Championship which is going to come up in April 28th to May 4th.”

“So we are going to attend those championships. We are going to attend the third and the fourth ranking series.”

Preparation for the World Championship

The 2025 World Championship is a top priority for the NWF as it offers critical experience for athletes.

“The biggest event this year 2025 is the World Championship, and we are preparing our athletes.”

Talent Discovery and Development

With Nigerian Wresling Legends such as Olympic medalist, Blessing Oborodudu and Oduwayo Adekure retired, the focus is on grooming the next generation of wrestlers:

“You know, top of our athletes are retired, Oborodudu and Oduwayo Adekure.”

“So we are going to prepare the young ones that are going to take over from them.”

“We are going to prepare them very well, and I am very optimistic and very sure that they are going to do well.”

With a busy calendar of tournaments, including the African Championships, ranking series, and World Championship, Purity remains confident in the team’s potential.

“We are preparing our athletes and are very optimistic that they will do well.”
