Sergio Perez’s time at Red Bull has come to an end, two years before the expiration of his contract.
The Mexican driver, who struggled throughout the 2024 season, has reached a termination agreement with the team after a disappointing campaign, failing to win a race and finishing on the podium only four times.
Meanwhile, his teammate Max Verstappen clinched his fourth consecutive world title.
Perez expressed gratitude despite his departure:
“I’m incredibly grateful for the past four years with Red Bull Racing and for the opportunity to race with such an amazing team.”
“Driving for Red Bull has been an unforgettable experience and I’ll always cherish the successes we achieved together.”
The driver’s exit paves the way for 22-year-old Liam Lawson, who is set to join the senior Red Bull team after impressive performances in several races during the past two seasons.
It’s expected Lawson will be officially promoted ahead of the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Perez’s departure also brings changes to Red Bull’s sister team, with Isack Hadjar, who finished second in Formula 2, joining Racing Bulls alongside Yuki Tsunoda.
Perez’s move comes after a series of underwhelming performances. His last podium finish was in China, after which his best result was sixth place at the Dutch Grand Prix.
Red Bull’s failure to secure the constructors’ title, finishing third behind McLaren and Ferrari, was another blow to Perez, who struggled to match Verstappen’s dominance.
Despite Perez’s struggles, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner praised the Mexican driver’s contributions:
“I would like to thank Checo [Perez] for all he has done for Red Bull Racing over the past four seasons.”
“From the moment he joined in 2021 he proved himself to be an extraordinary team player, helping us to two constructors’ titles and to our first one-two finish in the drivers’ championship.”
“While Checo will not race for the team next season, he will always be an extremely popular team member and a treasured part of our history.”
Verstappen also took to social media to bid farewell:
“It’s been an absolute pleasure driving alongside you. We’ve had some amazing moments together that I’ll always remember.”
Perez’s departure raises questions about the decision-making process at Red Bull, especially after Horner extended Perez’s contract just months before the slump in form.
The 34-year-old driver had been instrumental in Verstappen’s first title in 2021, notably helping defend against Lewis Hamilton during the season finale in Abu Dhabi, which allowed Verstappen to clinch the championship.
As Red Bull looks ahead to 2025, all eyes are on the future of its driver lineup, with official announcements expected soon.
