Joe Aribo, Paul Onuachu, and their Southampton teammates suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, equaling a Premier League record they would rather forget.
Super Eagles duo of Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu featured for the entire 90 minutes in what turned out to be a nightmare outing for Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium.
Aribo making his 15th appearance of the season, has scored twice this campaign but couldn’t prevent his side from another crushing defeat.
Tottenham, who had been winless in their previous five matches and missing nine first-team players, exploded into life with a stunning first-half performance.
James Maddison led the charge with a brace, while Son Heung-min, Pape Sarr, and Dejan Kulusevski added to Southampton’s misery. Remarkably, all five goals came within a blistering 14-minute period, leaving Southampton 5-0 down at the break.
A Record to Forget
This latest defeat means Southampton are now the only team in Premier League history to trail by five goals at half-time on multiple occasions.
The first instance occurred in October 2019, when they were also 5-0 down at half-time before losing 9-0 to Leicester City.
The loss leaves Southampton rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table with just five points from 16 games.
With the team struggling at both ends of the pitch, the pressure continues to mount on the Saints as they fight to avoid relegation.
For Joe Aribo and his teammates, a significant turnaround will be needed to restore any hope of salvaging their season.
