Carlos Alcaraz’s bid to claim the 2024 ATP Finals title ended in disappointment as he was knocked out by Alexander Zverev in straight sets on Thursday.
Second seed Zverev secured his place at the top of the John Newcombe Group with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 victory, booking his spot in the semi-finals.
Alcaraz, who won both Wimbledon and the French Open earlier this year, struggled throughout the match, battling a persistent chest complaint and displaying a noticeable lack of form.
In the first set Alcaraz saved seven break points, however , the 21 year-old was unable to overcome Zverev’s consistency and power, losing his third group-stage match.
Zverev Powers Through, Alcaraz Fights to the End
Zverev, who has been in sensational form this week, won all three of his group matches without having his serve broken—a remarkable feat considering the high level of competition at the ATP Finals.
Against Alcaraz, the 27-year-old German continued his clinical performance, even though the opening set proved to be a tough battle.
“I’m glad to get this one,” Zverev said after the match. “Carlos has beaten me a few times this year, and we have a great rivalry and friendship. I’m always glad to play him—unless he wins.”
Alcaraz’s Difficult Week
Alcaraz’s struggles were compounded by his ongoing chest issue, which has been a significant concern throughout the tournament.
“It has been a difficult week for me, struggling with some physical problems,” Alcaraz said after the defeat.
The Spaniard aims to be fit for the upcoming Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, where he will also team up with compatriot Rafael Nadal for what will be Nadal’s final professional tournament.
“Today I faced one of the best players in the world, without a doubt, playing really solid and great tennis,” Alcaraz added.
