Super Eagles and Chippa United goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali has broken his silence on the collapse of his anticipated transfer move during the recent transfer window.
Nwabali, who was hailed as a national hero after his impressive performances at the 2023 AFCON, where Nigeria finished as runner-up, was widely expected to secure a move to a bigger club.
Even Chippa United’s assistant coach confirmed that there were offers on the table for the shot-stopper, but no deal materialized.
One of the clubs he was heavily linked with was Kaizer Chiefs, and it seemed likely that the 27 year-old would make the switch.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Chiefs opted to sign Rwandan goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari instead.
Reflecting on the situation, Nwabali shared his thoughts in an interview with iDiski Times
âI wouldnât say I was really affected by what happened after last season and after the Afcon because itâs football,â he said.
âSometimes it works and sometimes it doesnât work but as a footballer one thing is for sure is that deals come and deals also crash. But one thing I know is that even with all this happening you donât have to lose your value as a soccer player.
He added: âWith everything that happened, I even felt like I was going to leave the club but Iâm still with the club so it doesnât change anything.â
Despite the disappointment, Nwabali has maintained his position as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper and continues to be a key figure at the back for both club and country.
His performances have been crucial in Chippa Unitedâs solid start to the season.
The club currently sits fourth on the South African Premier Division table, with seven points, just two points behind the league leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns.
Chippa United will now aim for a top finish, and with the Nigerian in top form, their ambitions seem well within reach.
