Super Eagles interim coach, Austin Eguavoen has firmly dismissed reports that he has stepped down from his role, labelling the claims as “fake news.”
Speculation about Eguavoen stepping down from the coaching role started following Nigeria’s goalless draw against Rwanda in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Several reports had suggested that interim coach, who doubles as the NFF Technical Director, had relinquished his position after managing the team in their recent matches against Benin and Rwanda.
Upon arriving at Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja, Eguavoen set the record straight:
“It’s just unfortunate that people just triggered something that is not correct and the situation we are in now, we don’t need negative stories.
“I only talked about, how I am going to sit down with the hierarchy of the Federation after these two games and how I will be prosecuting the next games.”
He expressed concern about the false reports, saying, “But when I saw that story I was kind of worried, concerned.”
“Whatever people are reading out there is not correct, I am still very much in charge and still the Technical Director of Nigeria Football Federation saddled with the responsibility of being in charge of the Super Eagles at this moment and that’s where we are.”
Nigeria currently leads Group D with four points from two games, having secured a 3-0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo before playing out a 0-0 draw against Rwanda in Kigali.
With the AFCON qualifiers resuming in October, it remains uncertain whether the NFF will appoint a new coach or continue to trust Eguavoen and his assistants to lead the team for the remaining fixtures.
