Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, had reached a historic milestone by climbing to 8th place in the latest FIBA Women’s Basketball rankings.

The feat is a significant leap for the team, which moved up four spots from their previous 12th place position.

The updated rankings, released on Thursday evening, reflect D’Tigress’ impressive performance at the 2024 Olympics.

Under the guidance of coach Rena Wakama, the team reached the quarter-finals for the first time, defeating higher-ranked teams such as Australia and Canada in the process.

Despite their eventual loss to the United States in the quarter-finals, D’Tigress made history as the first African team—male or female—to break into the top 10 of the FIBA rankings.

Also, they became the first African women’s team to advance to the quarter-finals of the Olympics, further solidifying their place among the world’s elite in women’s basketball.
