Trabzonspor Renews Pursuit of Paul Onuachu
83
Trabzonspor has reignited its pursuit of Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu, with renewed determination to secure his services permanently.
The Turkish club is back at the negotiation table with Southampton, aiming to turn Onuachu’s successful loan spell into a long-term arrangement.
Following a successful stint last season, where Onuachu netted 17 goals and provided four assists, helping Trabzonspor secure a third-place finish in the Turkish league, the club has been eager to extend his stay.
However, the deal has encountered complications, with negotiations stalling over differences in valuation.
Southampton, firm in their stance, have set Onuachu’s price at €10 million while Trabzonspor’s previous attempts, including a €7 million offer plus €2 million in add-ons, was rejected.
Southampton had originally acquired Onuachu from Racing Genk for €18 million last year, making their current demand a reflection of their substantial investment.
In a bold move to sweeten the deal, Trabzonspor has submitted a new proposal that includes both cash and player exchanges.
According to Fotomac, the Turkish side’s latest offer includes €7 million along with two players—Umut Bozok and Greek forward Taxiarchis Fountas.
This bid surpasses Trabzonspor’s previous record transfer fee, underscoring their commitment to securing the Nigerian forward.
Onuachu, contract with Southampton runs until June 2026 but Southampton’s decision to reassign his jersey number ahead of the Premier League season suggests they are bracing for a future without him.
Once with the number 12, Onuachu will now wear the number 32.
The number 12 jersey, previously worn by Onuachu, will now be donned by Edwards, while the number 32 has been vacant since Kamari Doyle’s move to Brighton & Hove in January.
As of now, it remains uncertain whether Southampton will accept Trabzonspor’s latest offer, leaving the resolution of this transfer saga still up in the air.
