D’Tigress Coach Rena Wakama Calls for More Investment in Women’s Basketball

Following a historic run at the 2024 Paris Olympics, D’Tigress coach Rena Wakama has called for greater investment in women’s basketball in Nigeria.

Wakama’s team made history by reaching the quarter-finals, marking the best performance by any African team in the history of the Olympic Games.

Despite a valiant effort, D’Tigress were defeated 88-74 by the United States, exiting the tournament with heads held high.

In light of this achievement, Coach Wakama emphasized the need for more support and resources to build on the team’s success.

“We need to invest in ourselves,” Wakama urged. “Give the girls the resources and support they need to reach the podium next time. We are capable, and we have the talent.”

Wakama also highlighted the pride in the team’s makeup, stating, “Everyone on the team is a full Nigerian.

“We don’t have to go out and get someone like other teams. We are born and bred Nigerians. But we have to invest in the future and in sports.” She said after the game.
