In response to reports suggesting that Onome Ebi was lobbying for a place in Nigeria’s squad for the Olympic Games in Paris, the veteran defender has firmly denied any such involvement.

Ebi, 41, clarified her position, stating, that she has never been part of Randy Waldrum’s plan for the games as the coach wants to develop younger players.

“I was never involved in the Olympics program from the start. I never had any reason to call anyone or think I would be with the team because of the limited amount of players (18 players) going, and the coach, (Randy) also made me understand that he wants to focus on younger players for the Olympics, which I respected his decision as the coach before the qualifiers.” Ebi said in a lengthy post on social media.

Head coach Randy Waldrum announced the squad for the upcoming Olympics Women’s football event with Onome Ebi and Francisca Ordega missing.

Expressing her disappointment for being omitted from the team Ebi added, “I would have loved to end it all with the honour of helping the team qualify and going for the Olympics, which was my goal, but that wasn’t in my power alone to make happen and I would never beg to achieve that.”

Ebi also addressed the false stories being circulated about her, condemning the actions of those responsible.

“I believe they were paid to tarnish my reputation and all I’ve done for the country for reasons I’m still wondering, surprised, and asking why.” She wrote on her social media handle.
