President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Tonobok Okowa has expressed confidence that Team Nigeria will exceed its target at the 13th African Games ongoing in Ghana.

Following an impressive performance on Day 3 of athletic events at the University of Ghana, Legon, where Nigeria secured four gold medals and one silver, Okowa conveyed his optimism about the team’s overall performance.

Okowa praised the athletes’ outstanding achievements, particularly in events such as the men’s and women’s 4×100m relays, the women’s 100m hurdles led by Tobi Amusan, and the men’s 400m won by Chidi Okezie. Additionally, Esther Elo Joseph clinched a silver medal in the women’s 400m.

“I think we will surpass the target that was put at stake at the beginning; let’s see what happens. Our plan is to take the remaining two relays; I pray that it will happen like that, and then let’s see what we have in the two that remain,”

Reflecting on Nigeria’s depth in talent, Okowa highlighted the competitiveness among athletes.

“A lot of our boys that are in school are very hot, but they are not here. When they join this team, it is going to be difficult for us to select who to represent Nigeria. It is good for such stiff competition among them, but we will get the best possible; we will get the best,” said Okowa.

With the remaining events still to come, Okowa remains optimistic about Team Nigeria’s prospects, expressing hope for continued success and surpassing the initial targets set for the Games.
