Zambia Hopeful of Reaching Knock-out Rounds

After losing to former World Champions, Japan, FIFA Women’s World Cup debutants Zambia expects a much improved performance in their next games, according to the the FA General Secretary, Ruben Kamanga.

Zambia’s, Shepolopolo, went down 5-0 to Japan on Sunday in their first ever FIFA World Cup game, and in his assessment of the team, Kamanga told BRL the defeat provides an opportunity for the team to gain experience.

“We missed two players Hazel Nali and Grace Chanda. Hazel has been our first choice goalkeeper for sometimes, she was the first choice at the Olympics and African Cup of Nations,” the Zambian FA official explained.

“Also, Grace Chander has been the vice captain of the team for sometimes too, leading the team. When these players aren’t in the team, there’s a feeling that something is missing, especially Grace, due to her leadership.”

“Yes they were not part of the team, but they continued to cheered their teammates,” He said.

Following the harsh lessons against Japan, Kamanga says steps are being taken to make sure the team bounce back against Spain and Costa Rica.

“Playing at the World Cup is a big experience for us, but qualification on its on is a big achievement.

“We gave Japan too much respect and space, in terms of allowing them control the proceeding, and didn’t do much in the final third.

“This is some of the issues the coach will address, and we will try to recover mentally and prepare for the team.

“We also have to believe that we can do something with the two games left.”
