Real Sociedad manager, Imanol Alguacil has expressed his unwavering support for Nigerian forward Umar Sadiq, emphasizing the player’s commitment and effort despite limited playing time.
Sadiq was previously linked with a move away from the club during the summer transfer window, but no deal materialized.
Instead, the 27-year-old has stayed at Sociedad, determined to overcome his struggles and rediscover his form.
His development at the club has been hindered by recurring injuries, making it difficult to secure regular playing opportunities.
However, Alguacil entrusted him with a starting role in Sociedad’s 2-1 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League.
During the game, Sadiq thought he had scored but saw his goal disallowed but his manager praised his positive attitude and determination.
“And what happened with Sadiq is obviously annoying, because it’s important for forwards to score and, for one that scores, it’s ruled out,” Alguacil told Marca after the match.
“But he gave his all and, despite the few minutes, he’s working and behaving very well with his teammates. Let him keep working like this and hopefully, when he gets the next opportunity, he’ll score, because he deserves it.”
In the match against Maccabi Tel Aviv, Sadiq was actively involved, registering two shots on target and narrowly missing a scoring chance.
He recorded 19 touches, completed all 10 of his passes accurately, and won two out of five ground duels.
So far this season, Sadiq has made seven appearances across all competitions.
While he is yet to score, he has provided one assist and is averaging 45 minutes per game.
With Alguacil’s public backing, the Nigerian forward will be hoping to turn things around and make a greater impact in the coming matches.
