Xabi Alonso Voices Concerns Over Boniface, Tella’s AFCON Participation

Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso has expressed apprehension regarding the timing of the 2023 African Cup of Nations.

The tournament to be hosted by Cote D’Ivoire, is scheduled to be held from January 13 to February 11, 2024.

Alonso could be without several key players including, leading scorer Victor Boniface, and newly Super Eagles recruit Nathan Tella, due to their participation in the tournament .

Boniface and Tella are key members of Leverkusen’s exciting attacking forwards.

The Spanaid however believe the potential departure of his star players could have negative impact on his team.

“As table-toppers in the Bundesliga, the absence of the Nigerian forwards could significantly impact our attacking options,” Alonso said, as per Transfermarkt.

“It is a concern for January and February, perhaps not having five players,”.

Morocco’s Amine Adli, Burkina Faso’s Edmond Tapsoba, and Ivorian Odilon Kossounou are other stars who are expected to attend the tournament.
