World number Two Caroline Wozniacki overcame a spirited fight from Top seed Simona Halep to clinch her first ever Grand slam, defeating the Romanian 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 to win the Australian Open on Saturday.
Wozniacki, 27, raced to a five point lead in the first set but gradually saw her opponent fight back to force the game into a tie breaker.
The Dane would then fall to Halep – a brilliance the Romanian has shown all through the tournament – in the second set, although she struggled with an injury.
The two then headed into the final set poised for their first grand slam.
But, it would Wozniacki’s day, who had made only one singles final appearance in a grand slam – Halep had made two prior.
An incredible fighter 🇷🇴💪
