FIFA has sanctioned both the NFF and their Congolese counterpart, Fédération Congolaise de Football Association, following incidents that occurred during the 2026 African World Cup play-off final.
Nigeria received a financial penalty after supporters were found guilty of throwing objects during the match.
FIFA stated that the offence constituted a breach relating to order and security at matches, citing Article 17 and Article 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
As a result, the Nigeria Football Federation was fined 1,000 Swiss francs.

The Congolese football body received a heavier sanction after fans were found to have used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the match.
The issue was particularly noticeable during the penalty shootout, when DR Congo supporters reportedly aimed lasers at Nigerian players in an attempt to distract them.

Citing Article 17.2.d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, FIFA imposed a 5,000 Swiss francs fine on the Congolese federation for the misconduct of its supporters.
Meanwhile, Nigeria is still awaiting FIFA’s decision regarding a formal complaint alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the fixture.
