Why Super Eagles Stars Struggle Internationally – Julius Aghahowa

Former Nigerian international Julius Aghahowa has shared his thoughts on the challenges some Super Eagles players face in translating their impressive club form to the national team.

Recently, some players in the Super Eagles squad have struggled with the national team, despite excelling at their respective clubs.

A notable example is Victor Boniface, who has been sensational in Germany for Bayer Leverkusen. Since joining from Union Saint-Gilloise, Boniface has thrived under Xabi Alonso, winning all domestic titles. However, his form at club level has yet to reflect in his performances for Nigeria.

In 11 appearances for the Super Eagles, Boniface has managed just one goal, with his overall displays falling short of expectations.

Speaking on Brila FM’s No Holds Barred with Ifeanyi Udeze, Aghahowa, who earned 32 caps and scored 14 goals for Nigeria, emphasized the need for patience and understanding.

“It happens to some players. It’s very rare to find players consistently performing well for both club and country,” Aghahowa noted.

“If a player is doing well at their club and not so well in the national team, the person might need time and the right pieces around them to truly compliment and build chemistry.”

Aghahowa also highlighted the unique demands of international football, stressing the importance of work ethic and a sharp mindset, especially for strikers.

“Strikers need to hustle on the pitch. Particularly in the national team, you need a killer mentality.

You must have an impeccable work rate,” the former striker advised.
