Former Nigerian international and NFF Technical Committee member Victor Ikpeba has called on Nigerians to rally behind Eric Chelle, the newly appointed head coach of the Super Eagles.
Ikpeba emphasized that only collective support will ease Chelle’s transition and ensure his success, particularly as Nigeria prepares for crucial World Cup qualifiers in March.
According to Ikpeba, two victories during the international break could revive Nigeria’s chances of securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Eric Chelle was officially unveiled as the substantive head coach of the Super Eagles earlier this week, a decision that has sparked mixed reactions among fans and analysts.
Many have questioned whether the former Malian international has the credentials to lead Nigeria’s national team effectively.
Speaking on Brila FM’s No Holds Barred with Ifeanyi Udeze, Ikpeba acknowledged the controversy surrounding Chelle’s appointment but urged Nigerians to look beyond his national team playing career and focus on his potential contributions as a coach.
“The appointment of a coach for the Super Eagles will always generate a lot of interest,” the former Monaco forward remarked.
“This is one of the biggest countries in Africa, and that’s the passion that comes with the national team.
“Even if we had appointed Pep Guardiola, there would still be complaints. If there are no arguments, there won’t be success.”
Ikpeba also dismissed the skepticism around Chelle’s abilities and instead appealed for optimism and unity, stating,
“A decision has been made on a new coach by the NFF, and we have to support it. Eric Chelle is a young coach who will succeed with our support.
I am optimistic that with the backing of Nigerians, we will still qualify for the World Cup.”
Addressing concerns about the domestic CHAN team, Ikpeba clarified that Chelle would not be replacing Daniel Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ilechukwu, who successfully guided the team to qualification. Instead, Chelle will play a supervisory role, ensuring continuity and effective collaboration.
