Speculation continues to mount over the future of Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who has remained a free agent since leaving Chippa United in February.
The 29-year-old has been linked with a move to another South African Premiership club, Kaizer Chiefs. The Amakhosi have struggled during the 2025/26 season, falling way behind league leaders Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
Nwabali has made no secret of his admiration for the Chiefs in the past. And a move to the FNB stadium could suit both parties.
No guarantees over returning Brandon Petersen
The Chiefs have been able to call upon their long-term goalkeeper Brandon Petersen since 2021. The South African has been a reliable presence, keeping 11 Premiership clean sheets in 2025/26, and his valuable leadership has led to him captaining the team.
However, Petersen has been sidelined with an injury since late February and required appendix surgery. Initial indications suggested that he could miss several months of action.
Bruce Bvuma, starting in Petersen’s absence, has endured mixed fortunes as the Chiefs’ backup goalkeeper. The club lost against Orlando Pirates and Richards Bay before a 1-0 win against Durban City; therefore, signing a high-quality goalkeeper could be an important addition.
Reports have suggested that Petersen could now be available after the upcoming FIFA international break, but there is no guarantee that he will immediately return to his former level.
Signing Nwabali would ensure that Chiefs have a top goalkeeper available while Petersen fully recovers, making them a more formidable team in the eyes of sports bettors. And if you’re keeping one eye on the latest Premiership odds, Goal.com compares betting offers in South Africa on this page.
Nwabali brings Premiership and international experience
Chiefs would not exactly be taking a chance on Nwabali. They would be signing a goalkeeper with a wealth of experience in both South African and international football.
Nwabali spent four years at Chippa United, helping the Eastern Cape side climb the table in successive seasons since their 14th-place finish in 2022/23.
Additionally, he would bring valuable leadership. Upon signing a contract extension with the Chilli Boys in 2024, he was confirmed as the club captain.
Considering that Nwabali is also Nigeria’s starting goalkeeper, having debuted for the Super Eagles in 2021, adding such an experienced professional would certainly be beneficial for the Chiefs.
Nwabali showed his quality in standout AFCON performances
Proof of what Nwabali could bring to the four-time Premiership champions was on full display during Nigeria’s 2025 AFCON campaign.
The shot-stopper played all but one of the Super Eagles’ matches during the tournament, helping them reach the knockout stage in victories against Tanzania and Tunisia during the group stages. Nwabali was not called into action during the 4-0 rout of Mozambique in the round of 16, nor the 2-0 quarter-final win against Algeria. But he made five saves in normal time during Nigeria’s semi-final loss on penalties against Morocco.
His standout moment, though, came in the third-place play-off against Egypt. Nwabali rose to the occasion, denying Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush in the penalty shootout as he helped his team win bronze.
As Kaizer Chiefs enter the final stages of the 2025/26 season, they need someone who can step up during the biggest moments. Nwabali’s AFCON performances prove that he can be that player.
