Genk CEO Michel Louwagie, has revealed why Gift Orban wasn’t allowed to leave during the just concluded transfer window.

Orban is one of the most sought after young players in Europe for the past eight months and was tipped to make a move to a bigger league.

He was said to be on the radar of Tottenham, Lille and Fulham with his valuation at €30m.​

However no deal materialized and was forced to stay back with Gent, at least until January.

“We really need to stop doing that. Dutch clubs only had a deficit of €1m in the 2021-2022 season, while we had a deficit of €150m.

“They close their gaps by selling at higher prices,” Louwagie said.

Orban arrived Gent from Norwegian side Stabaek last January and has scored 26 goals and two assists in only 31 games in all competitions for the Belgian side.
