What happened to Iwobi against Man City?

Two Seasons ago Alex Iwobi was showing some real promise and giving positive displays, he’s been pretty good for both the Nigeria National team and Arsenal in some matches this season but doesn’t seem to do too much anymore.

Iwobi started the game on Sunday as Arsenal dropped valuable points in the race for a top-four finish with a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad.

Sergio Aguero put Pep Guardiola’s side ahead inside a minute with a diving header after a glaring error from Alex Iwobi and good work from Aymeric Laporte.

Laurent Koscielny pulled Arsenal level with a brilliant stopping header of his own but Aguero restored the advantage just before the break when he tapped home Raheem Sterling’s perfect cross.

What happened to Iwobi?

Iwobi made a disastrous mistake to gift City the first goal in the 51st seconds of the game, he was caught in possession when trying to dribble out of danger.

Barely got into the game after that.

To be fair to Iwobi, Arsenal were always going to lose this game, but they didn’t need to make it so easy for Pep Guardiola’s men who had a real point to prove on the day.

“I would have played Aaron Ramsey in midfield because he would have offered some solidity to the team in midfield, not Iwobi,” says Legend TonyAdams.

“Against Manchester United, Arsenal were too open and were duly punished in a swift counter-attack in which Iwobi came on and I don’t think he will be good in this formation particularly against City.”

Capable of flashes of brilliance, his decision-making at times should be better given his experience at the top level despite his tender age.
