West Brom Can’t Win… Josh Maja Goal Not Enough Against Poor Luton

Josh Maja improved his goal tally for the English Championship season following another big performance, Friday, in West Brom’s 1-1 draw against Luton Town.

Maja notched his 8th goal in 13 league appearances for the Baggies, a stoppage time strike in the first half to put West Brom ahead.

West Brom are in contention for a promotion spot, but the results over six matches have been underwhelming.

Carlos Corberán was wary of the trip to Kenilworth Road, and sounded a note of caution about the Luton attackers.

“They play with two strikers and they are two very good strikers when you compare them to others in this league,” Corberán said. “They both have a strong physical presence. They like to receive a lot of balls quickly from wide areas of the pitch and from the two centre-backs.”

“Luton have a special atmosphere at their stadium, a stadium which is a lot more traditional than it is modern. There’s a tradition there and it’s something I respect. What they have is traditional British football.

“It’s a squad which has not been built to be in the position that they are in, but in the Championship, no team is built to be in a bad position. We know how tough it is going to be.

“Both teams have the desire to add points and we’ll be going there looking to achieve a positive result.”

His players didn’t heed the warnings and on the hour-mark, Luton got the equalizer.

Tahith Chong lifted the home crowd with his goal and team from their precarious relegation position – only just.

The result snapped a two-game losing run for Luton, but stretches West Brom’s winless streak to seven matches.

This season, West Brom have been largely carried by their 25-year-old Nigerian forward.

Maja is two goals away from hitting double figures, but already has a tally of 9 goals contribution to the Baggies’ campaign.

In his previous two seasons, the forward had very small impact among other reasons was a long term injury that limited him to just two league matches last term.

But, he seems to have found his confidence back and is now second on the goal scorers’ standing.
