Newly appointed Super Eagles head coach, Eric Sekou Chelle, has declared that his primary objective is to lead Nigeria to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking during his unveiling ceremony at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, the Franco-Malian coach emphasized the need for the team to adopt a winning mentality starting from their next match.
“The most important thing is not Eric Chelle or the players. The first goal is Nigeria, to qualify Nigeria,” Chelle stated.
“We must win all six games. I’m focused on the next game, and after that, we will take it one step at a time.”
Chelle stressed the importance of instilling discipline and unity within the team to achieve this ambitious target.
He outlined his vision for creating a winning culture within the Super Eagles.
“You need to put in place strict rules around this team,” he said. “We need to build a team with great spirit, motivate the players, talk to them like brothers, and impose our game everywhere.
Aggression and focus on our goals will be key.”
Chelle, who becomes the 37th coach in the history of the Super Eagles, was handed a two-year contract with an option for a one-year extension if he secures the World Cup ticket.
His full assignment is set to commence in March when the World Cup qualifying series resumes. The Super Eagles currently sit fifth in their group with just three points from four matches.
The team faces a crucial away fixture against Rwanda on March 17 before hosting Zimbabwe in Uyo on March 24.
Chelle’s tenure begins with high expectations as he aims to rally the team back into contention and set a strong foundation for future success.
The journey to the World Cup starts now, and Chelle is determined to lead Nigeria to the global stage once again.
