Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has responded to his surprising exclusion from the final nominees for the 2024 CAF Goalkeeper of the Year award.
CAF announced the three finalists for the award on Thursday: Ronwen Williams (South Africa), Yahya Fofana (Ivory Coast), and Andre Onana (Cameroon).
Nwabali’s name was notably absent, sparking widespread debate among fans and pundits.
Nwabali was expected to feature on the shortlist after his exceptional performances for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.
The 28-year-old played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s journey to the final, keeping four clean sheets during the tournament.
His standout moment came in the semifinal against South Africa, where he saved two penalties in a dramatic shootout to secure Nigeria’s place in the final.
The goalkeeper also enjoyed a stellar season at club level with Chippa United in South Africa’s DSTV Premiership.
In 29 appearances, Nwabali conceded just 27 goals and kept 12 clean sheets, often delivering match-winning performances that helped his team finish 12th in the league standings.
Reacting to his omission, Nwabali wrote on X:
“We move!!!”
His absence from the shortlist has raised questions, especially when compared to some of the other nominees.
Andre Onana’s inclusion has been particularly contentious. The Cameroonian goalkeeper endured a difficult season at Manchester United, facing heavy criticism for costly errors that led to goals.
At the 2023 AFCON, Onana featured in only one group-stage match—a 3-1 defeat to Senegal—and played no further role as Cameroon were eliminated in the Round of 16 after losing to Nigeria.
In stark contrast, Nwabali’s performances both domestically and internationally stood out, leaving many fans and analysts baffled by his omission.
The CAF Awards ceremony is scheduled for Monday, December 16, where the Goalkeeper of the Year will be announced during a grand gala event.
