Former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo is confident that Nigeria has what it takes to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON title.
Reflecting on the team’s consistent ability to advance past the group stage, Yobo expressed optimism about the Super Eagles’ chances in the upcoming tournament.
Yobo made these remarks after the AFCON 2025 draw, which took place on Monday in Rabat, Morocco.
Nigeria has been drawn into Group C alongside the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia, the Cranes of Uganda, and the Taifa Stars of Tanzania.
“We do have a very good team, and the players are improving,” said Yobo, who served as one of the assistants during the AFCON draw ceremony.
“We have some of the best set of players in this generation and they showed that at the last AFCON.
Looking at the group it’s never going to be easy for us but knowing the Super Eagles coming out of the group is never a problem.”
The Super Eagles came agonizingly close to winning their fourth AFCON title in 2023 but fell 2-1 to hosts Côte d’Ivoire in the final.
Yobo, captain of Nigeria’s AFCON-winning side in 2013, believes the team can go one step further this time.
“I hope that we start very well and we can take that momentum to the final.
We are building at our last performance at the AFCON 2023 and it’s about time we get our hands on the trophy again and I think we have the players and a wonderful new coach to do that.”
Meanwhile, the tournament draw has set up some intriguing matchups in other groups.
Hosts Morocco will face Mali, Zambia, and Comoros in Group A.
Group B includes Egypt, South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe, while Group D has Senegal, DR Congo, Benin Republic and Botswana.
Algeria, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, and Sudan make up Group E, while Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Gabon, and Mozambique will battle it out in Group F.
Nigeria heads into the tournament with an illustrious AFCON history, having won three titles (1980, 1994, and 2013) and earning a total of 16 medals from 20 appearances.
With five runner-up finishes and eight bronze medals, the Super Eagles will be looking to add a fourth title to their decorated record.
