WAFU Nations Cup: Nigeria face Benin in Semis – and it’s the third time in two months

Nigeria will play against Benin Republic for the third time in two months after the Squirrels turned the cards in group B to secure top spot and qualify for the Semi final of the WAFU Nations Cup.

The two first met in the 2018 CHAN qualifiers over two legs.

Benin defeated Nigeria by a single goal from Seibou Mama in the first leg but capitulated against the Eagles 2-0 in Kano.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday at the Nduom Sports Stadium, Benin were staring at elimination as Niger opened scoring on the 4th minute through Adebayor Zakari.

However, Niger had two players sent off and on the 37th minute Rodrigue Fassinou scored to bring the Squirrels level.

Eventually though, the numerical advantage paid off as Jules Elegbede sealed the winner to sink Nigerien hearts.

Prior the final group B matches, the Squirrels had only an outside chance of qualifying behind either Niger or Senegal.

But Senegal were held to a goalless draw by Ivory Coast, thus finishing third behind Benin and Niger while Ivory Coast finished bottom of the group.

The semi final matches come up Thursday with Nigeria playing against Benin, while hosts Ghana take on Niger.

Both matches will be played at the Cape Coast Stadium.
