Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has provided an encouraging update on Victor Boniface’s recovery from a thigh injury, while also backing Czech striker Patrik Schick to continue his impressive form in the Nigerian’s absence.
Boniface sustained the injury during the November international break and returned to Germany with his recovery timeline still uncertain.
Before the setback, the Super Eagles forward had enjoyed a promising season, tallying eight goals and one assist in all competitions.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of Leverkusen’s DFB Pokal clash against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena, Alonso revealed that Boniface’s recovery is progressing steadily. However, the Spaniard cautioned against setting a specific return date.
“We have hope. Every two or three days, tests are carried out to see how he is doing. He is on the right track, but it is too early to say when he will be back,” Alonso said, as reported by Liga Insider.
Leverkusen, who are seven points behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, have struggled to replicate last season’s dominance, which saw them go 51 games unbeaten en route to the league title.
In Boniface’s absence, Schick has stepped up brilliantly, scoring five goals in his last five games. Alonso expressed his admiration for the striker’s all-round contribution.
“He doesn’t just score goals. He did a lot of things very well, including against Union in a very intense game against a tough defence,” Alonso remarked.
As Leverkusen prepare for their high-stakes cup tie against Bayern, Alonso will be counting on Schick to maintain his fine form while Boniface continues his road to recovery.
