Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface has encountered a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury, delaying his much-anticipated return to action.
Boniface, who made an impressive start to the season with eight goals and one assist in 15 appearances, sustained the injury in mid-November while on international duty.
While he briefly returned to team training just before Christmas, the club announced ahead of their friendly against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen that the 24-year-old experienced “a small step backwards in the rehabilitation process.”
The Nigerian forward was initially expected to make his comeback against Borussia Dortmund next weekend. However, with this latest development, his return date remains uncertain.
Boniface is now likely to miss the Dortmund clash and the following match against Mainz on January 14.
Despite his absence, Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has reliable options in attack. Czech forward Patrik Schick, who found brilliant form before the winter break, is expected to lead the line.
If Schick continues his strong performances, the team may be able to navigate Boniface’s absence without significant disruption.
Boniface’s recovery timeline will be closely monitored as Leverkusen aims to maintain their strong position in the Bundesliga.
